The Belt-Way

There are many strange cultural practices in Israel but one of the strangest would have to be the aversion of drivers to wearing seat-belts.

Surely when driving here is so dangerous, you wouldn't dare be in the car without wearing one?

The biggest culprits seem to be the taxi drivers and when you spend all day behind the wheel, wouldn't you be the most likely to belt up as opposed to the least?

I've seen it all. Taxi drivers who have put the belt in, except they're sitting on top of it and taxi drivers who have inserted the belt into the clip of the seat next to them. It's such an inconvenience?

Bizzare. Any explanations out there?

Not sure what the law is here, but Taxi Drivers and delivery people are exempt from having to wear seatbelts in the UK.

I think the reason is two fold.

1. Quicker escape if someone threatens you if they try to nick the cash or goods.

2. Delivery guys are often in and out the car, just makes it a tad easier (bad reason, I know).

very bad reason. Ugh. I'm thinking of lorries overturning on the m25 and the guy smashing through the front window. STop the visual. AAArgggh.

I know you're meant to leave the locks open if you're on the motorway as opposed to urban driving.....dunno.

i dont see whats so hard to understand, seatbelts are annoying! and if youre gonna be in a car all day long i can understand the urge to just take it off and take youre chances!

I would say it is because drivers are not the ones who need to fear for their lives - pedestrians do! The lack of seat belt wearing bothered me much less than when hitching in the west bank and your driver is wearing helmet and flak jacket...and you do not have one...
