Bottoms Up!
Nice weekend with the in-laws around. Been shepping Nachas and doing alot of kvelling with the granddaughter.
Had a nice Shabbas and the conversation around the table was quite interesting ranging from Borat to Bo Diddly and everyone inbetween.
Call me naive, but part of the discussion had me in shock. Still getting over it.
The subject at hand was dating in Katamon and what was going down in the hood.
Female Guest: Apparently the trend today among girls in Katamon is to ask the guy to go through the back door and not the front so she retains her status.
DCDI: WTF? This can't be right can it?
Another Female Guest: I heard that as well about the Upper West Side.
Is this rumour urban legend joining the likes of the hole in the sheet or is this actually what's going on?

As a single in Katamon, I can only offer these points:
a) None of my friends do this.I've never even heard of this rumor.
b) Who has a back door? Everyone I know in Jerusalem has a front door and, maybe, a mirpeset . . . one or more flights up. What is the guy supposed to do, scale the building's back wall like Spiderman and come in through the porch? This rumor sounds logistically unlikely as well as culturally improbable.
c) If it IS true, it is most likely to be true among a certain set which has come to be known in my mind as "The people who Jeru Geru hangs out with, assuming that Jeru Geru actually exists and is not a hoax blog, because none of the people HE describes bear any resemblance at all to the people with whom *I* hang out."

I wouldn't doubt the basis for the rumors, but I would just have to wonder who on earth has a back door - my friends on the UWS sure don't.
that should make things easier for the ortho gay community of the uws..

Ok, I'm currently on the UWS, and this is NOT common, though pre-marital IS, as I'm sure it is in Katamon too. I just never expected to hear it come out like that at the dinner table.
I miss Jeru Guru. True or not, I don't care, would love to see him/her/it/them come back.

I can tell you, that I know of someone in Sydney who has been rammed into the backdoor category (oh, a good pun, I couldn't resist).
When I found out, I was a little shocked, but apparently it isn't uncommon in the Greek community either.
I'm surprised that no one has touched on this but apparently it is quite a thing in the Muslim community as well who in some ways are more frum than us.
A friend of mine at College did this with her boyfriend because she didn't want her parents to think that the two of them were getting it on.
After doing some research yesterday, there may be some truth to this, but think it's blown way out of proportion due to the salacious nature of the subject.
Community dependant. Many of us would be proud to be seen having men coming thru our front door.
We can all be sure that the Guru is reading this blog and grinning that his or her legacy lives on.
Dont think the legacy will ever die Dark Horse. Maybe if we try hard enough, we convince JG to make a comeback. What do you think?
Anonymous, I lived on the UWS for a while and I got the impression that anything and everything was common...
Don't know about the UWS or Katamon, but when I was living in Brooklyn (almost 4 years ago!) the girls there were very into the method described above...
It is funny how things have changed. In my day in England it was the 'anything but' crowd... Now it seems it has been converted to the 'anything butt' crowd!

I am a 23 year old female who lives in Katamon.
I prefer my boyfriend and guys I've been with in the past to go through the backdoor than the front.
Regardless of what the actuality is, it makes me feel as though I'm saving myself for marriage. And it's a good litmus test as if the guy doesn't want to go there then I don't want to be with him.
I’m beginning to feel like I missed out on something, making Aliya already hitched…. :-(
